About the Opportunity:
As a Truck Driver / Laborer, you will be responsible for performing physical labor and operating light trucks and equipment in support of the Department of Public Works. This role requires the ability to work outdoors under a wide range of weather conditions, often in strenuous and demanding environments. While you will receive assignments from the Highway Foreman, you are expected to perform tasks independently and contribute to the overall effectiveness of the team. This position plays an important role in maintaining Town infrastructure, assisting with seasonal snow removal, and ensuring the safety and accessibility of Londonderry’s roadways.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform laboring tasks associated with road and site construction and maintenance.
- Operate all Town-owned trucks and light equipment.
- Operate trucks and equipment on an emergency and seasonal basis for winter snow removal and other clean-up operations.
- Perform preventative and routine maintenance on trucks and small equipment.
- Carry out traffic control functions at job sites.
- Follow safe work procedures associated with assigned duties.
- Attach and remove snow plows and related equipment; perform plowing, salting, and sanding operations.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with management, staff, elected officials, consultants, contractors, and the public.
- Contribute to team efforts and perform other related duties as assigned by the Highway Foreman.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- At least two (2) years of experience in operating trucks and light-duty construction equipment.
- Valid driver’s license from state of residence.
- Valid Commercial Driver’s License (Type B with air brakes) without restrictions preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of trucks and light-duty construction equipment.
- Familiarity with safety procedures, work hazards, and regulations associated with assigned duties.
- Ability to perform strenuous physical work outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Experience in snow plowing, salting, and sanding roadways.
- Strong interpersonal skills for effective collaboration with staff, contractors, and the public.
Work Environment:
This position involves both indoor and outdoor work. Indoor work occurs in truck and equipment cabs or shop areas. Outdoor work (approx. 75%) is conducted under varying conditions, including extreme temperatures, snow and ice, rain, dirt, dust, vibrations, vehicular traffic, uneven or slippery terrain, and exposure to insects.
Occupational Exposures:
You may be exposed to cleaning fluids, fuels, lubricants, dust, pesticides, herbicides, solvents, paints, hydraulic fluids, fertilizers, fumes, and hazardous materials. Other exposures include poison ivy/oak/sumac, insects such as bees and wasps, long periods of sunlight, and communicable diseases transmitted by humans or animals.

The final appointment will be made by the Town Manager based on the recommendation of the Director of Public Works. The starting hourly rate will fall within the established step table (Step 1: $26.89 - Step 7: $35.44) and relevant prior experience may be taken into consideration when determining placement on the step table.
