The City of Keene’s Public Works Department is seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Utility Operator to support operations at our Water Treatment Facility. This position plays a vital role in ensuring safe, reliable, and efficient treatment processes that serve our community every day.
The Utility Operator is responsible for operating, monitoring, and maintaining equipment and systems at the City’s Water Treatment Facility and associated outstations. This position involves hands-on operational work, routine maintenance, laboratory testing, and use of computerized monitoring systems to ensure compliance with regulatory standards and optimal facility performance.
Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Operate and monitor all treatment facility equipment and systems to ensure safe and efficient operations
- Perform routine operational procedures for water treatment processes
- Use the City’s SCADA system for plant operation, monitoring, and alarm response
- Conduct routine preventive maintenance, including lubrication, inspections, and oil changes
- Inspect, test, and troubleshoot equipment; perform minor repairs or report issues to supervision
- Monitor and adjust laboratory and field instruments in accordance with established standards
- Set up field samplers; collect, preserve, log, and analyze samples
- Perform daily field sampling and laboratory testing (including pH, dissolved oxygen, temperature, residual chlorine, TOC, and other parameters)
- Complete daily computer data entry and calculations
- Perform confined space entry in accordance with City safety policies
- Assist with facility, building, and grounds maintenance, including tank cleaning and general upkeep
- Maintain required state certifications through ongoing training and workshops
Note: This position is subject to recall and stand-by duty during non-regular working hours, weekends, and holidays. This position should be able to respond within 60 minutes, depending on weather conditions, to staff the work site. In addition, once a CDL is obtained, this position is subject to federal commercial driver’s license (CDL) drug and alcohol requirements.
Minimum qualifications:
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and at least 6 months of related experience. This position must obtain a CDL with tank endorsement within 12 months of employment. A valid driver’s license is required. The Grade I NH Water Treatment License Operator in Training (OIT) is required within 6 months, the Grade II NH Water Treatment License OIT is required within 19 months, and the Grade I NH Water Distribution License OIT is required within 24 months of hire.
Pay and Benefits:
During the 6-month probationary period, the pay rate for this position is $24.64 per hour. Upon successful completion of the probationary period, this position will move to the regular pay schedule which consists of pay steps and hourly rates ranging from $25.62- $31.16 per hour.
