Highway Laborer- Street Maintenance

The City of Portsmouth is seeking a Laborer to join our Highway Department. This is a great opportunity to work outdoors, learn valuable skills, and to help the community running smoothly. 

This position is full-time, 40 hours a week, Monday-Friday, 7:30am-3:30pm with the opportunity to be on-call. 

Starting pay range is $22.32- $24.61 an hour based on experience and per the AFSCME 1386A Working Agreement.

NATURE OF WORK
The purpose of this position is to pick up and otherwise clear refuse, garbage, vegetation and other debris in all weather conditions from curbs and roadsides and leave collection areas generally clean.  Other seasonal clearing and cleaning operations are also performed.  The work involves constant safety awareness, the ability to recognize and take appropriate actions regarding hazardous materials and to use hand tools.

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants for this position must have graduated from high school or have earned a graduate equivalent diploma (GED), have a working knowledge of how to care for, operate and use tools and equipment effectively and efficiently and have not less than two years’ experience in construction or maintenance work.  

New hires must obtain before the end of their probationary period and incumbents must possess a valid commercial driver’s license, class B and have no offenses which would prohibit or restrict insurability by any insurance carrier providing coverage to the City. Ability to operate a snow blower and plow with an F550 a must. Additional certifications and licensing may be required.

CDL Requirement:
To obtain a New Hampshire CDL, you must meet the following criteria:
* Hold a valid New Hampshire Driver License
* Be at least 18 years of age
*If you are an out of state applicant, you must be 21 years of age or older
