CAPTAIN – FIRE RESCUE TRAINING

SUMMARY:

The Captain of Fire Rescue Training is responsible for the development of all facets of training, education, and safety programs to maintain department-wide proficiency in Fire, Hazmat and Technical Rescue for all personnel. The Captain of Fire Rescue Training works under the direction of the Deputy Fire Chief. Work is carried out independently day-to -day with policy direction. Communications and coordination are maintained with the Deputy Chief to assure departmental goals and objectives are accomplished in assigned areas.

 

TYPICAL DUTIES:

  • Coordinates or conducts on-shift and off-shift training classes for fire subject matter with internal and external instructors to full time and Call Firefighters.
  • Develops, maintains, and administers training standards, procedures, and training manuals for the department.
  • Coordinates and facilitates the department’s CDL Driver program.
  • Maintains and applies a high level of up-to-date knowledge of current trends in Fire strategies and tactics, and Technical Rescue skills and Hazmat skills.
  • Maintains accurate personnel training records in the records management system.
  • Generates and analyzes personnel training data and develops data-informed training solutions.
  • Serves as the department’s Safety Officer.
  • Develops and coordinates fire department safety programs and initiatives.
  • Acts as liaison to NH Department of Safety - Division of Motor Vehicles and the Division of Fire Standards and Training
  • Liaison with National Fire Academy, and local Fire Department training divisions.
  • Evaluates After-Action Reports within the department for areas of enhancement or improvement.
  • Coordinates and facilitates the department’s After-Action Report review for all incidents with an AAR.
  • Manages and applies for new grants at local, state, and federal levels.
  • Participates in department policy development in assigned areas.
  • Participates as an active member of department’s command staff.
  • Participates operationally at emergency scenes as needed.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Ability to be hired in the State of NH compliant with the Chapter Fire 700 Mandatory Standards for Appointment to full-time Career Fire Service personnel (CPAT or lateral transfer), Pro-board Certified Firefighter 2, National Registry EMT (Advanced or Paramedic preferred), Pro Board Instructor I (II & III preferred or within one year), NH Fire Academy State instructor (attainable within one year), Pro-board Fire Officer I, Pro-board Fire Officer II Preferred (attainable within one year), Pro-board NFPA Driver/Operator: All-Vehicles Certified, Teaching/Instructional experience, Associates degree in fire service, or a related field, from an accredited college or university (Bachelors preferred), 5 years of full-time fire experience with 2 years of supervisory experience in the fire service, CDL-B with air brake and tanker endorsement, Minimum of 1 Pro-board NFPA 1006 competency Technician Level skill, Incident Safety Officer (attainable within one year), Hazmat Operations (Technician preferred), Pro board NFPA Swift Water Rescue Level 1 preferred (attainable within 1 year), Working knowledge of information technology and applications, Ability to organize and analyze data, Understanding of Verisk Insurance Services Office (ISO) Public Protection Classification (PPC) program training requirements. Any combination of education, training, and experience which demonstrates possession of the required knowledge, skills, and abilities comparable to the above qualifications will be considered.  Ability to meet the medical qualifications of NFPA 1582.
