Beginning July 1, 2025, rechargeable lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries may no longer be disposed of in New Hampshire landfills or incinerators. Because Li-ion batteries can spark, ignite, or explode when crushed or damaged, improper disposal has caused a growing number of fires at municipal transfer stations and solid waste facilities. This session will provide municipal officials with a clear overview of the new disposal ban, the safety risks associated with Li-ion batteries, and the recycling and collection options available to New Hampshire residents. NHDES staff will outline municipal responsibilities under RSA 149-M:27, including public education expectations and strategies for effective outreach. Attendees will receive practical tools and ready-to-use resources to help municipalities communicate the ban and promote safe battery management in communities.
