When you accepted your position as a local official, whether through election or appointment, you thought “How hard can this be?  Budget’s sound simple, I know what taxes are.  Government finances can’t be that different.”  Now after having had your position for a while, you realize just how different government finances are from the real world.  You might be asking yourself who is responsible for which piece of finances?  What is fund balance?   How is the tax rate actually calculated?  Why is segregation of duties important and how can we segregate with limited staff?  What is the impact on finances when boards make certain decisions?  Join our Government Finance Specialist in demystifying what local officials’ roles are when it comes to government finances.  Whether you are a select board member, a budget committee member, a town treasurer, or any other local official, join us for a review and discussion on an overarching view of local government finances and the fiscal responsibility that goes with each role.

Materials such as the PowerPoint presentation will also be distributed electronically. No printouts of the materials will be provided.

Pre-registration and payment is required.  Registration will be open until 5pm on September 28, 2026. You will be billed according to the pricing on the options you select at registration. If you wish to make changes, NHMA must be notified in writing at least 48 hours in advance. Refund of the full registration fee will be made if cancellation notification is received 48 hours in advance. Cancellation less than 48 hours in advance, including no-shows, will result in you being charged the full cost of the workshop.  If you have made a change to your registration (from in person to virtual, for example), NHMA will adjust your invoice if we receive notification as outlined above. If you register but cannot attend, a recording of the workshop will be provided if payment has been received.
