The City of Portsmouth's Public Works is seeking 2 reliable, skilled, and motivated Utility Mechanics to join the Water/Sewer/Stormwater Division. This position plays a critical role in maintaining essential public infrastructure that supports the safety, health, and daily life of our community.
Individuals in this position fulfill one or more of the operational work objectives of maintaining, inspecting, repairing and constructing City buildings and property, water distribution and wastewater collection facilities, storm drain systems, and street related facilities requiring the application of specialized skills such as paving, plumbing, masonry, automotive, painting, utility line inspection, and other general trades and performing skilled and semi-skilled work as required. Employees in this position are expected to understand project or task objectives, identify, and execute the appropriate tasks, use tools correctly and to successfully complete assigned work with minimal instruction. Work is performed individually, as part of a larger work unit, may involve the supervision of others and requires the use of good judgement. Supervision is varied.
Applicants for this position must have graduated from high school or have earned a graduate equivalent diploma (GED), have a working knowledge of one or more trades and not less than three (3) years’ experience in construction or maintenance work.
New hires must obtain before the end of their probationary period and incumbents must possess a valid commercial driver’s license, class B, and have no offenses which would prohibit or restrict insurability by any insurance carrier providing coverage to the City.
Staff are encouraged to obtain a Water Distribution License Grade I and a Sewer Collection License Grade I. Additional compensation is available for those who obtain these two licenses.
