Location: Town of Madbury, NH
Job Title: Highway Maintenance Worker
Employment Type: Seasonal (April through September)
Reports To: Town Expert Highway Agent or designee
Job Summary: The Town of Madbury is seeking a skilled, dependable individual to assist the Town with seasonal roadway and roadside maintenance and other infrastructure tasks.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Perform roadway and shoulder maintenance and repairs such as patching, crack sealing, and general repairs
- Perform roadside maintenance such as mowing, trimming, brush clearing, and tree removal
- Perform road drainage maintenance such as cleaning ditches, culverts, and catch basins
- Perform roadkill and roadside litter removal
- Repair and install road signs, guardrails, and other traffic control devices
- Perform general tasks including shoveling, sweeping, lifting, and carrying materials; and setting up and removing traffic control devices including cones, signs, barricades, and flags
- Follow all safety rules and procedures, including the use of personal protective equipment
- Safely operate power tools and heavy equipment
- Work cooperatively with Town staff and follow supervisor instructions
- Assist in landscaping, mowing, and vegetation control of Town properties
- Respond to emergencies as required
- Perform other related duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications:
- At least 18 years of age
- Valid driver’s license
- Ability to perform physically demanding work for extended periods
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Dependable, safety-conscious, and able to work as part of a team
- Experience operating heavy equipment
- Prior experience in highway maintenance, construction, or outdoor labor
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
Desired Qualifications:
- Commercial driver’s license (Class B)
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Training in road construction and maintenance or a related field
- Knowledge of Madbury roads, infrastructure, and maintenance procedures
- Certified flagger
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions
- Ability to operate heavy equipment and machinery and hand tools safely and effectively
- Ability to perform heavy manual labor
- Ability to stand and sit for extended periods
- Ability to access all levels of a construction site, traverse uneven terrain, climb a ladder, and enter and exit vehicles
- Ability to adhere to safe work practices
- Willingness to learn and take direction
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
Working Conditions:
- Outdoor work in all weather conditions
- Regular exposure to nearby traffic, noise, dust, and construction equipment
- Extended periods of standing and or sitting
- Frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching and or crawling
- Frequent shoveling, raking, and sweeping
- Frequent lifting and moving of objects at times up weighing up to 75 pounds
- Occasional exposure to odor, waste, and debris
- Occasional work in active watercourses including slippery, muddy, and uneven surfaces
- Occasional work in confined and restricted spaces including narrow, dark pipe structures
- Use required safety equipment including high-visibility safety clothing and other protective equipment
Compensation and Schedule:
- Duration: Summer season (April – September)
- Hourly wage: $23 to 30 per hour depending on experience and qualifications
- Schedule: Average of 30 hours per week primarily on weekdays with the potential for early mornings and or late evenings as needed.
