Job Summary
Under the direction of the Director of Parks & Recreation, the Recreation Intern will be responsible for assisting with the administration, supervision, and programming of the Parks & Recreation Department in accordance with established policies and procedures. Recreation Management Interns are expected to work 40 hours per week from Mid-May to Mid-August in order to be able to complete their College Internship requirements.
Examples of Duties
- Assists Director and Program Coordinator in all department programming, including all aspects of staffing, training, and program development.
- Ensures established safety and security rules and regulations are followed.
- Maintains positive working relationships with all camp and waterfront staff; keeps direct lines of customer friendly communications open with the public.
- Plans and/or assists with planning short and long-range programs and special events for all ages of the general public.
- Assists clerical personnel with program registrations and phone coverage, as needed.
- Assists in implementing marketing plan for department.
- Coordinate special assigned programs but not limited to the Summer Concerts, Movies in the Park, and National Night Out.
- Assist in staffing any program or facility such as camps as needed
- Assist with ordering supplies for programs and facility
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of the principles and objectives of recreational and leisure service programming and administration. Knowledge of safety precautions and sound risk management practices in the operation of recreational and leisure time programs and activities. Skills in communication, leadership and public relations
Knowledge of the development stages of children ages 5 - 15. Ability to think critically and make sound evaluations. Ability to connect with campers and staff members. Ability to observe camper behavior assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques. Ability to supervise staff in work tasks and functional duties. Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, and to make effective public presentations. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
Minimum Qualifications
Duties require knowledge of parks and recreation management equivalent to the completion of a Junior Year of college studying Recreation Administration, Physical Education, Sports Management, Outdoor Recreation or related field of study.
