Patrol Sergeant

The Belmont Police Department is seeking a motivated, principled, and forward-thinking law enforcement professional to serve as our next Patrol Sergeant.

About the Role

The Patrol Sergeant performs responsible and complex work in the protection of life and property, the maintenance of law and order, and the prevention and investigation of crime. In addition to active patrol responsibilities, the Sergeant serves as a first-line supervisor responsible for guiding, mentoring, and evaluating subordinate personnel.

Working under the general supervision of the Captain, the Patrol Sergeant operates with considerable independence, exercising sound judgment and leadership during both routine operations and critical incidents.

Key Leadership Responsibilities

  • Supervise, schedule, and mentor patrol officers and support staff
  • Ensure officers are trained in modern police practices, legal updates, and departmental policies
  • Inspect personnel appearance and equipment readiness
  • Review reports and investigations for completeness and accuracy
  • Provide on-scene supervision during emergencies and major incidents
  • Oversee criminal and traffic investigations of a complex nature
  • Prepare performance evaluations and address discipline when necessary
  • Serve as Officer-in-Charge in the absence of command staff
  • Act as Assistant Operations Commander
  • Serve as Quartermaster, Fleet, and Plant Maintenance Officer
  • Investigate citizen complaints and participate in internal affairs when required
  • Act as first-line supervisor for union grievances

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must meet or exceed all requirements of a Belmont Police Officer
  • Associate’s degree (or equivalent education/experience)
  • Six (6) years of full-time experience at the rank of Patrolman or above
  • High moral character with no criminal or serious motor vehicle convictions
  • No suspension, demotion, or retraining discipline within the past three years
  • Ongoing satisfactory physical fitness and in-service training

Candidates must meet all qualifications for Patrol Corporal, Detective, and Patrolman positions.

Salary: 

The pay range for this position begins at $88,074 and is negotiable based on experience and qualifications. 

Overtime Opportunities 

Details $75.00/hr          

Hours of work/Status:

This position is not included in the union, is considered essential, days/nights/weekends/holidays as needed.
