Mechanic II/Fleet

Join the City of Keene as our Mechanic II and keep our fleet and City moving! Are you a hands-on, skilled mechanic who takes pride in keeping vehicles and equipment running at peak performance?  Do you enjoy working on everything from patrol cruisers to fire apparatus, and from light-duty trucks to snowplows and sweepers?  We are looking for an experienced and motivated Mechanic II to join our Fleet Services Division — a team that powers the City's vital services!

 

As a Mechanic II, you’ll be a critical player in maintaining the safety, reliability, and performance of the vehicles and equipment that keep our city running.  Your day might include:

  • Performing preventative maintenance on city vehicles and heavy equipment
  • Diagnosing and repairing malfunctions across a wide range of mechanical, electrical, brake, and hydraulic systems
  • Welding, fabrication, and bodywork
  • Conducting safety inspections and towing services
  • Working in a fast-paced environment where no two days are alike

You’ll have your hands on everything from compact cars and dump trucks to fire engines and airport equipment — keeping Keene moving and safe, day and night!  Specific duties can be found in the job description.

 

Note: This position is subject to recall and stand-by duty during non-regular working hours, weekends, and holidays.  This position should be able to respond within 60 minutes, depending on weather conditions, to staff the work site.  In addition, this position is subject to federal commercial driver’s license (CDL) requirements for drug and alcohol.

 

Minimum qualifications: 
High school diploma or general education degree (GED); with 3-5 years of related experience related to automotive, heavy trucks and equipment, small engine, and mobile equipment maintenance and repair.  Skill sets required include electronics, hydraulics, fuel systems, and engine and braking systems.  A valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A and the NH State Inspectors License are both required within 3 months of hire.   Automotive hand tools up to 1 inch are the responsibility of the position.

Pay and Benefits: 
During the 6-month probationary period, the pay rate for this position is $23.92 per hour.  Upon successful completion of the probationary period, this position will move to the regular pay schedule which consists of pay steps and hourly rates ranging from $24.94- $29.74 per hour, depending on experience.
