POSITION: Mechanic DEPARTMENT: Public Works
FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt REPORTS TO: Highway Supervisor
GENERAL SUMMARY
Under the supervision of the highway supervisor performs skilled maintenance, parts replacement and repair work on automotive and other public works vehicles and equipment while overseeing the safe operating condition of the vehicles. Equipment includes dump trucks, loaders, graders, sidewalk plows, pickup trucks, small engine equipment, lawn equipment and the like. Incumbent exercises considerable independent judgment in repair methods and replacement of parts. Operates vehicles and heavy equipment to maintain town roads and property.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Repairs and maintains all on and off-road Town equipment.
- Performs mechanical, hydraulic and electrical repairs on town vehicles and public works type construction equipment.
- Performs State Certified Inspections.
- Overhauls and repairs engines; both gasoline and diesel.
- Keeps records; ensuring proper servicing schedules.
- Inspects equipment as needed prior to being sent to job site(s).
- Troubleshoots and makes repairs as needed including clutch and transmission replacements, motor tune ups and brake adjustments.
- Removes dents and does repairs to damaged vehicle and equipment body parts.
- Examines equipment for determination of repair or replacement and makes recommendations.
- Evaluates mechanical malfunctions and repairs equipment as necessary to return to service as quickly as possible.
- Performs welding tasks and fabrication.
- Orders, maintains and tracks related supplies and parts as necessary. Obtains quotes and maintains paperwork on all parts purchased. Prepares and submits paperwork such as purchase orders, manifests and bills.
- Operates and maintains the heavy or general-purpose equipment to which assigned.
- Performs routine and preventive maintenance on equipment.
- Operates all equipment prudently and safely according to specific guidelines. This includes federal and state laws and regulations, local policies and requirements, direction by the Director of Public Works and applicable manufacturer recommendations and industry standards.
- Displays knowledge of and practices effective maintenance requirements, work hazard avoidance and safety practices and traffic laws relating to the operation of equipment and roads maintenance.
- Maintains work area and grounds.
- Snow plowing and removal operations.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Performs other related duties as requested.
DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
High School diploma/GED and Valid NH CDL at a level necessary to operate all equipment used is required. Five years experience as a master mechanic.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of the standard methods, materials, tools, and equipment of automotive service trade and comprehensive knowledge of the operation principles and mechanics of internal combustion engines and diesel drive equipment and of mechanical repair methods applicable to heavy trucks and construction equipment is essential.
- Thorough working knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade is essential.
- Strong skills in locating and repairing defects in automotive equipment, in the use and care of hand and machine tools utilized in mechanical repair work are required.
- Knowledge of operating a backhoe, loader, dump truck, grader and various highway department equipment.
- Knowledge of preventive maintenance techniques and mechanical skills.
- Knowledge and skill for snowplowing, salting, sanding and operating equipment under various severe weather conditions.
- Ability to work with others with minimum supervision.
- Must be a responsible, reliable worker.
- Must have the ability to obtain all required licenses.
- Computer skills for data entry and maintenance tracking.
SUPERVISION EXCERCISED
Provides general supervision to unskilled or semi-skilled workers. Carries out all supervisory functions in accordance with Town rules, policies, and applicable laws.
LICENSING AND CERTIFICATION
NH State Inspection License. ASE Certification - Engine repair, tune up, brakes and transmission. Certification in heavy brake repair and inspection. Certified to work with freon A/C Systems.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED
Tire machines, wheel balancers, jacks, vehicle lifts, drills, press saws, torches, welders, scan tools, hand, air and power tools and general office equipment. Individual operates various highway department equipment including snowplow, loader, back hoe, dump trucks, and any other equipment assigned to the department. Hand tools are used in the maintenance and repair of equipment.
