Full Time Laborer

The Town of New Castle is seeking a full-time staff member in support of the Public Works Department. The department is responsible for several areas of town operations including Highway, Facilities/Grounds, Water, Sewer, Stormwater, and operation of the seasonal Great Island Common park. The position reports to the Public Works Director and performs skilled and unskilled tasks including but not limited to:

  • Highways
    • Plow and salt Roads
    • Fill potholes & patch asphalt
    • Repair road signs
    • Trim vegetation on roadsides
    • Operate town vehicles and equipment in a safe manner
  • Facilities and Grounds
    • Janitorial tasks as needed
    • Painting
    • Light carpentry and general building maintenance
    • Shovel snow and apply de-icing chemicals to entryways
  • Water, Sewer, Stormwater
    • Maintain infrastructure including pipes, valves, manholes, catch basins, etc.
    • Read and replace water meters and radio devices
    • Flush hydrants and perform winterization
    • Perform pump station inspections and repairs
  • Great Island Common
    • Perform landscaping including mowing, weed whacking, pruning, mulching, raking, etc.
    • Operate tractors, mowers and backhoes in performance of duties
    • Any other tasks as assigned by the Director

Candidates for this position must have graduated from high school or have earned a graduate equivalent diploma (GED). Candidates should have relevant experience in at least one area of the department's responsibility, totaling at least 2 years of construction/maintenance experience. They should have knowledge of how to care for and operate tools and equipment. They should be comfortable engaging with residents and maintaining a positive attitude when representing the department. Candidates shall obtain a NHDES Water Distribution Grade 1 license within 18 months of hire. Candidates should have a good driving record. This position requires work outside of regular working hours during emergencies and during snow plowing operations. 

This position is 40 hours per week and is eligible for full benefits including paid time off, retirement, and health insurance in accordance with the town’s employee handbook.
