Finance Director

The Town of Chester, New Hampshire is currently seeking an experienced candidate to serve as a part-time or contracted Finance Director with the possibility of full-time employment within the first year.  

Chester, New Hampshire (located in Rockingham County, incorporated in 1722, population ~5,300) is a full service community governed by a five-member Selectboard under the traditional Town Meeting form of government.   Chester is bisected by Routes 102 and 121 and located 50 miles north of Boston, MA and 13 miles east of Manchester, NH.  It is accessible to the myriad of cultural, educational, and recreational resources of the Northeast.  Chester residents are proud of the Town’s quality of life, “close knit” feel, and excellent schools as well as its highly regarded municipal services, including recreational and conservation offerings.

The Town has an unassigned fund balance within recommended levels and has consistently achieved stable budgets and tax rates, and successful audits.  The Town completed its last town-wide revaluation in 2024.

The next Finance Director will follow a successful incumbent of over a dozen years who oversaw a significant series of improvements and restructuring of the Town’s accounting arrangements.  

This  position is responsible for overseeing all internal and external financial reporting requirements, and coordinating all finance related functions of the Town, including financial analysis and adhering to long-term financial strategies and policies.  The Town’s annual budget is approximately $10 million and its total property valuation equals $1.2 billion.  The Finance Director is a critical member of the Town’s leadership team, reporting to the Selectboard through the Town Administrator and supervising the Town Finance Officer. 

A Bachelor’s degree in accounting or a related field, along with five to ten years of progressively responsible experience in municipal accounting or finance, is required. Alternatively, an equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates a strong potential for success in the position will be considered. Experience with BS&A accounting software and DRA Municipal Tax Rate Setting Portal (MTRSP) is desirable.
