About the Department
Wilton's Department of Public Works manages and maintains the infrastructure our community depends on. From roadways and bridges to parks and municipal grounds. The department is currently made up of a Highway Division, A Parks, Recreation, and Grounds Division, and works closely with the Cemetery Trustees, the Sewer and Water Commissions, and the Recycling and Transfer Station to support town-wide services.
As Director, you'll be supported by a Part-Time Public Works Coordinator, and the Highway Division may include a Foreman and a team of Truck Driver/Laborers who also lend a hand to other town departments as needed.
What You'll Do
- Lead winter maintenance operations — plowing, sanding, and salting — and pitch in behind the wheel when needed.
- Oversee the upkeep and improvement of town roads, bridges, buildings, and grounds.
- Build and manage the department's annual budget, and guide procurement and contracting for public works projects.
- Supervise, train, and support a team of dedicated field and maintenance staff.
- Coordinate with the Sewer and Water Commissions, Recycling and Transfer Station, and other town partners.
- Act as the in-field manager of the town’s stormwater management and environmental compliance efforts
- Represent Public Works before the Select Board, Town Administrator, boards, and the public.
- Serve as part of Wilton's emergency response team, on call for storms and other emergencies.
What We're Looking For
- A bachelor's degree in engineering, construction management, public administration, environmental science, or a related field, plus 3+ years of progressively responsible experience in engineering, construction, or public works leadership — or —
- A high school diploma/equivalent with 6+ years of progressively responsible experience leading public works, construction, or similar teams, including 10+ years operating heavy equipment. (An equivalent combination of education and experience will also be considered.)
- A valid CDL-A or CDL-B (or the ability to obtain one), and a valid NH driver's license.
- Strong communication skills and comfort working with town boards, staff, contractors, and residents.
- Willingness to be on call for emergencies and, ideally, to live within about 20 miles of the DPW Garage.
