The City of Claremont is seeking an experienced and dynamic Director of Planning & Development to lead our efforts in building a vibrant, sustainable, and prosperous future for our city.

About the Role

As the Director of Planning & Development, you will oversee the day-to-day operations of the Planning & Development Department, which includes Building & Code Services, Business Development, Marketing and Community Planning. This is a key leadership role responsible for guiding economic development, city planning, and business growth initiatives that align with Claremont’s long-term vision.

Working under the broad direction of the City Manager, the Director will manage projects, engage with the public, and collaborate with elected officials, business leaders, and various city boards and commissions to drive meaningful progress in our community.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Leadership: Plan, organize, and evaluate work activities to ensure efficiency, effectiveness, and alignment with city goals.
  • Economic Development: Lead initiatives that enhance the local tax base, promote business growth, and create employment opportunities.
  • Community Planning: Oversee zoning administration, permitting processes, and long-term development strategies, including the City’s Master Plan.
  • Collaboration & Engagement: Work closely with the Planning Board, Zoning Board, Historic District Commission, Conservation Commission, Claremont Development Authority, and TIF Districts to facilitate growth and development.
  • Department Oversight: Provide direct supervision and guidance to seven employees within the department, ensuring high-quality performance and service delivery.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in planning, Business Development, Community Development, Business Administration, Public Administration, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).
  • Experience: Progressively responsible management experience in planning, community, or business development OR an equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Skills: Strong leadership, strategic planning, and project management capabilities with a track record of success in economic and community development.

Pay: $70,603.74 - $112,274.57 per year

The starting salary for this position will be based on the candidate’s qualifications, relevant experience, and internal equity, typically within the minimum to midpoint range ($70,603.74– $91,439.16).
