Fleet Mechanic

This position is responsible for diagnosing and correcting mechanical problems on a variety of town vehicles and equipment and for completing preventive maintenance procedures.  In addition, the position may be assigned to help maintain the stock room inventory of vehicle and equipment parts.

  • Maintains and repairs a variety of vehicles and heavy equipment, including backhoes, tractors, dump trucks, bulldozers, motor graders, street sweepers, police cruisers, fire engines, small trucks, cars, mowers, and a variety of gasoline- and diesel-powered equipment. 
  • Repairs and maintains emergency vehicles, including  engines, fuel systems, electrical systems, brakes, lights, two-way radios, sirens, water pumps, computer component and heating and air-conditioning systems. 
  • Performs vehicle and equipment maintenance procedures such as tune-ups, oil and filter changes, electrical system checks, drive train component checks, brake repairs and heating and air-conditioning repairs on all town vehicles and equipment. 
  • Performs corrective maintenance procedures, including hydraulic, electrical, and various degrees of engine repair, including electrical, brake, steering, fuel, hydraulic and air systems. 
  • Performs a variety of engine diagnostic procedures using hand-held and computerized testing equipment. 
  • Welds and fabricates parts as needed; modifies and enhances vehicles and equipment. 
  • Paints and makes auto body repairs. 
  • Responds to service calls during normal and after-work hours; makes field repairs. 
  • Assists with snow removal operations. 
  • Performs small engine repairs. 
  • Performs statutory inspections required by the State of N.H. 
  • Maintains fleet maintenance and repair records, including work performed, parts ordered, and parts pending logs. 
  • Maintains a clean work area; keeps track of tool inventory and upkeep; 

  ADDITIONAL DUTIES, IF ASSIGNED 

  • Monitors and maintains an inventory of parts for town vehicles and equipment. 
  • Researches price and availability of parts; contacts vendors to negotiate prices; researches parts and prices online. 
  • Maintains material safety data sheets. 
  • Shuttles town vehicles to various locations as required. 
  • Assists in the repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment. 
  • Performs monthly inspections of underground storage tank facility. 
  • Maintains inventory records; completes required reports. 
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
