City Clerk/Registrar of Voters

South Portland, a forward thinking, well-run city of 25,000 on scenic Casco Bay in southern Maine, seeks an experienced fulltime City Clerk/Registrar to support City Council members, oversee office staff, and play an important leadership role serving our community. 

The City Clerk is appointed by the City Council. Key responsibilities include administering elections, issuing and preserving vital records, and overseeing the City’s business licensing. The job requires versatility, alertness, accuracy, patience and excellent customer service skills. Attends Council meetings and prepares meeting minutes. Perform with integrity, ethics, personal accountability, and professionalism. Also serves as the City’s Registrar of Voters. 

This salaried position has a set 37.5-hour four-day week (Mon-Thu), with the option to work Friday remote or in-office flextime. Must have schedule flexibility to work additional hours for elections, and other relevant and/or necessary circumstances. 

Education/Experience: Associate’s degree, a minimum of five (5) years of City/Town Clerk experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.  Must be a Certified Clerk of Maine (CCM), Certified Municipal Clerk (CMC), or have the ability to obtain within three years of hire.  Notary Public and Dedimus Justice within one year of hire.

Starting Salary Range: $65,000 - $90,000 annually, DOE. Eligible for annual merit increases and annual COLA as approved.
