Building Inspector/Code Enforcement Officer/Deputy Health Officer
The Town of Amherst is seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Building Inspector/Code Enforcement/Deputy Health Officer to join the Community Development Department. This full-time, non-exempt position (Labor Grade 15) involves overseeing building, site development, and health-related inspections to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal codes and regulations. Reporting to the Community Development Director, the role requires a combination of technical expertise, effective communication, and adherence to safety protocols.

Key Responsibilities:
- Reviews permit applications, building plans, septic plans, and site plans for compliance with building, zoning, and health codes.
- Conducts on-site inspections during various construction phases to verify adherence to approved plans and safety standards.
- Coordinates with Fire Department and Public Works on departmental permits and sign-offs.
- Enforces zoning and building codes; stop work orders and initiate legal actions when violations occur.
- Issues permits for construction, alteration, demolition, and licenses related to electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and signage work.
- Provides guidance and assistance to property owners, contractors, architects, engineers, and the public regarding code requirements.
Qualifications:
- 3-5 years’ experience in construction, architecture, engineering, or building inspection.
- Knowledge of NH State building codes, electrical, mechanical, plumbing codes, and zoning laws.
- Certification in ICC residential and/or commercial building inspection or ability to obtain within one year of hire.
Wage range is $37.69 - $41.62 an hour, DOQ
