Equipment/Mechanic Operator

Job Summary

Employee performs a variety of activities designed to service, repair and maintain town owned equipment. Work is performed through the knowledge and specific certifications that denote expertise in equipment maintenance and operation. This position will also perform other maintenance tasks essential to public works operations.

Supervision Received

Works under the general supervision of the Public Works Foreman. Works with relative independence and judgement to reach desired results. Work is reviewed for conformance to industry standards to ensure appropriate care and safety are exercised at all times.

Supervision Exercised

Provides general supervision to co-workers when the assignment dictates. Must be a self-starter and able to work independently.

Compensation And Hours

Full time position assigned to Grade XIII on the union wage scale. Position is classified as non-exempt in accordance with overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

From November 1st to April 15th, this position is required to be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Must be available for the remainder of the year for extreme weather events. Working overtime is a requirement of employment.

Example Of Duties

Maintains all public works light, medium and heavy equipment in a reliable and safe condition for service, according to approved standards. Vehicles include but not limited to; pickup trucks, six-wheel dump trucks, loaders, backhoes, excavators, graders, pumps, small two stroke and four stroke motors.

Diagnoses, services and repairs various systems of equipment such as manual and computer electronic controls, air brake systems, computer controlled automatic transmissions, high voltage generators and pneumatic systems.

Fabricates, modifies and installs special equipment or replacement parts using welders, torch sets and plasma cutter.

Maintains service logs and records of maintenance on vehicles and equipment using fleet maintenance and management software.

Prepares cost estimates for materials.

Road tests vehicles.

When not engaged in equipment maintenance, this position will perform various tasks for the maintenance of town roads, buildings and grounds.

Duties may include cleaning and repairing culverts and catch basins, repairing pot holes, operating chainsaws, sweeping, raking and painting.

Operates trucks and equipment for winter snow removal operations.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

Knowledge of the standard practices, materials, tools, equipment and supplies used in the repair and maintenance vehicles and equipment.

Knowledge of work hazards, safety practices and traffic laws relating to the operation of heavy equipment.

Skill in the operation of heavy equipment; a wide variety of hand tools; gas and electric hand welding equipment; mechanized tools, jacks and hoists. Must also be skilled in the use of a wide variety of diagnostic testing equipment.

Ability to read manuals and schematics; diagnose mechanical, electrical and hydraulic functions; enter repair information in fleet maintenance and management software; establish and maintain effective working relationship with Department heads, Town officials, employees and the general public.

Physical Exertion And Environmental Conditions

For communicating with others, talking is required. For receiving information and instructions from others, hearing is required.  For doing the job effectively and correctly, sight is required. Specifically, close vision and the ability to adjust focus. May be required to exert significant physical effort such as lifting and carrying heavy equipment and materials. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving parts, sharp blades or instruments, fumes or airborne particles, blood or airborne pathogens, toxic or caustic chemicals, substances that may contain hazardous materials, outside weather conditions, risk of electrical shock and vibration. The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; traffic hazards; and extreme temperatures. During weather events, work may require an employee to spend long hours away from home with minimal sleep. The noise level in the work environment may occasionally be very loud. These physical demands described here are representative of those that might be met by an employee to successfully perform essential functions of this job. Qualifications

High school Diploma or graduate equivalent diploma (GED) and not less than three years’ experience maintaining and repairing light and heavy equipment. The equivalent of two years post-secondary training in automotive or equipment mechanics and a working knowledge of computer diagnostics and record keeping or equivalent combination of training and experience. Should also have knowledge of a variety of hydraulic systems and tier 4 diesel engines. Possession of a Class B CDL with no offenses which would prohibit or restrict insurability by any insurance carrier providing coverage to the Town. Shall supply his/her own tools. Obtaining additional certifications or licensing may be required.
