Deputy Fire Chief - Fire Prevention

Job Summary:

The Rochester Fire Department is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Deputy Fire Chief assigned to Fire Prevention.  Under the supervision of the Assistant Chief, this position will be responsible for providing fire prevention inspections, code enforcement, plans review, fire investigations and public education services for the City of Rochester. participate as a member of the management team in establishing strategic goals, service level priorities, department policies, and organization development plans; and coordinate special projects. It may at times be incumbent to act as the fire chief in their absence, may oversee investigations, respond to citizen complaints, resolve conflict, and is responsible for assisting with the fire prevention division budget.

The City of Rochester Fire Department is a progressive and forward-thinking organization. The City of Rochester is home to over 30,000 residents encompassing 45.75 square miles. Situated in the northern seacoast region of NH. Rochester is only one hour to the White Mountains and 45 minutes to the ocean.

Recommended Minimum Qualifications & Experience:

  • Associates degree from an accredited college or university in fire science or related field;
  • Seven or more years of progressively responsible experience in fire and/or emergency medical services, fire prevention, fire investigation, fire code enforcement, hazardous materials management, and public education;
  • Divisional or departmental management experience;
  • Minimum rank of lieutenant for at least two years;
  • Experience in labor relations;
  • Previous experience and expertise with Incident Command System (ICS) 100, 200, 700, and 800 (ICS 300 and 400 preferred)
  • NH or Pro-Board: Safety Officer Certification (obtain within one year of promotion)
  • NREMT-Basic certificate and NH EMS Licensure is required.
  • NH or Pro-Board: Fire Instructor I (II preferred)
  • NH or Pro-Board: Fire Officer I & II
  • NH or Pro-Board: Fire Inspector I & II and National Fire Academy: Command and Control or Fire Origin and Cause required or able to acquire within the first year of employment.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience and experience will be considered

The successful candidate will have excellent communication, planning and organizational skills and will be required to respond to working fires, large incidents, after hours planned events, as well as a multitude of other incidents and on occasion mutual aid responses. Also, may be required to assist in the management of emergency scenes. Salary: Pay range $59,898 to $80,293 DOQ/E.
