Position Purpose:

Operates a variety of motor equipment to repair and maintain town streets in the provision of public works services; this position performs all other related work as required.

Essential Functions:

  • Repairs roadways and roadbeds, grades roads, repairs ditches and shoulders, dumps and spreads gravel, applies hot top and patches to street surfaces.
  • Performs drainage maintenance, installs, maintains and repairs catch basins and associated piping.
  • Maintains parks, ball fields, town common, islands and buildings. This includes general maintenance activities for the highway garage and other Town properties including painting and carpentry.
  • Assists in road catch basin cleaning, landscaping duties, line painting and snow and ice removal operations.
  • Loads and unloads materials such as stone, gravel, timber, leaves and sweepings.
  • Uses a variety of power-driven and hand tools to perform assigned tasks.
  • Makes minor equipment repairs.
  • Oversees the safety of staff by instructing individuals in proper safety procedures and ensuring compliance with department safety policies.

Recommended Minimum Qualifications:

Education, Training and Experience:

High School Diploma and applicable vocational training must have an operating license, 1+ years of experience in the construction industry (or similar) preferably in the public sector working with local government, or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Demonstrated ability on the proper use of all safety equipment. Proven track record of safety. Valid New Hampshire Commercial Driver’s License (Class B) with Air Brakes endorsement and all licenses required by Federal or State authorities to operate any motor equipment.

Knowledge, Ability and Skill:

Knowledge: Advanced knowledge of all safety requirements and procedures, knowledge of department and office procedures, working knowledge of the proper use of all motor equipment, knowledge of advanced principles of construction, advanced knowledge of field operations. Advanced knowledge of complex sewer configurations required knowledge of the operation of hydraulic, pneumatic and electronic equipment. Must have advanced knowledge of all safety procedures and be able to demonstrate the proper use of all required safety equipment. Required to work any emergency as directed by the Commission or designee.
