Economic Development Intern

Strafford Regional Planning Commission seeks an Economic Development Intern to support our Economic Development District’s Recovery and Resiliency Planning Program. This position provides an opportunity to work with a collaborative team focused on supporting local communities and businesses recover from the COVID-19 Pandemic and plan for a more resilient future.

Responsibilities
 
This position will be primarily tasked with assisting SRPC’s Economic Recovery Coordinator and Senior Regional Planner for Economic Development. The intern will:
  • Assist with direct technical assistance to support municipalities and businesses.
  • Update and prepare regional economic development data and reports.
  • Communicate with municipalities and update their priority economic development projects listed in SRPC’s Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy.
  • Schedule program meetings, disseminate agendas, and draft meeting notes.
  • Assist with the development and maintenance of a resource website for business owners.
  • Research funding opportunities for businesses.
  • Assist municipalities with digitizing plan sets and records.
  • Prepare weekly project highlights to publish in SRPC’s Bits and Pieces newsletter.
Candidate Qualifications
 
Applicants must, at a minimum, be enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program studying planning, community or economic development, or other related fields.
 
The ideal candidate will have the following skills:
  • Excellent communication, writing skills and research capabilities.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office software applications.
  • Ability to meet variable deadlines and handle reprioritized tasks on occasionally short notice.
  • Team orientation and personal accountability.
While not required, the following skill sets are a plus:
  • Working knowledge of planning and local government processes.
  • IT, audiovisuals, cybersecurity, marketing, and/or website development.
  • Experience in R, Python, and/or ESRI GIS software. 
The rate of pay is $15-17 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications. The intern position is for 40 hours per week during academic breaks (summer 2021 and winter 2021-22) and up to 16 hours a week during the academic year (September 2021-June 2022). Exact start and end dates will be set to correspond with the selected candidate’s academic calendar and availability.
