Assistant Public Works Director
The City of Lebanon is looking for its next leader within its Public Works Department. The Assistant Public Works Director is key part of the department’s leadership team that includes the Deputy City Manager for Public Services, two Assistant Public Works Directors, and Administrative Services Manager, among others. This Assistant Director position oversees all aspects of the following groups: Fleet Maintenance, Highway/Maintenance, Cemeteries and Facilities and Energy.
The 2023 weekly salary range is $1,799.12 to $2,428.62 and is enhanced by a comprehensive, flexible spending benefits package that includes: health insurance with an employer paid HSA contribution toward deductible ($2,000 single coverage and $4,500 for 2-person/family coverage), paid vacation, sick, 12 weeks parental leave and personal days; dependent care FSA fully funded by City to maximum amount allowed of $5,000, city paid dental insurance, short-term and long-term disability; life insurance, enrollment in the New Hampshire Retirement System and other flexible benefit options!
We are looking for someone who will be a strong manager in two main areas: employee development and mentorship, and daily operations with particular focus on safety and fixed asset management data collection.
The successful candidate will be able to develop short- and long-term plans and priorities that utilize and align with our asset management efforts, will develop employees in their career goals, and ensure accountability to our mission of being a well-managed, highly-professional department. You should also be a manager who is comfortable balancing many projects with spending a lot of time walking around and getting to know your employees ensuring they are being safe, working to their full potential, and advancing the goals of being well-prepared and accountability. This person is also a key member in the decision-making of how the department makes short- and long-term decisions.
The successful candidate should also be able to work well with the City’s engineering, water, wastewater, and utilities maintenance teams on coordinating road and utilities work, has a firm grasp of road maintenance, facilities, and infrastructure projects, is comfortable holding contractors accountable, and is cool in emergency situations. This position also prepares the budget and capital spending plans and plays a leading role in public communications.
The ideal candidate has good oral, written and interpersonal skills, will be knowledgeable in the laws and regulations of roads and infrastructure, is able to prepare and manage a major department budget, capital improvement and equipment replacement plans, and is an engaged employee manager. A commitment to delivering excellent customer service and dedication to being a leader in the department are key personality traits. Engineering degree is not required.
