POSITION:  WORKING HIGHWAY/ROADS FOREMAN

                            DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS

WAGE:           $29.53 - $40.55, based on experience and qualifications.  

The Town of Bedford’s Public Works Department is in search of Working Highway/Roads Foreman. The successful candidate will be responsible for the direct in field management of the day-to-day operations within the Highway Department to include, but not be limited to, all facets of construction, maintenance, repair operations, emergency responses to weather events and management of Highway Department personnel.  Must be available year-round for emergency call-ins, as well as perform all other related work as required.  The Working Highway Foreman is responsible for maintaining and improving the efficiencies and effectiveness of all areas under his / her direction and control, in accordance with established and specified procedures. Reports to the Highway Superintendent.

TYPICAL DUTIES:

  • Directly supervise and assist in the maintenance and construction of highway department activities that may include repairs/ installation to; pavement, drainage, equipment, gravel roads, signs, sidewalks, curbs as well as stormwater maintenance (catch basin repairs / cleaning and street sweeping) and winter maintenance.
  • Assist in the planning, assigning and direction of highway personnel and equipment.
  • Oversee the use and operation of various types of light and heavy equipment used in highway department activities.
  • Operate transit, laser, GPS, and related equipment to set and check grades.
  • Occasionally service and perform minor repairs / maintenance on equipment as needed.
  • Operate snow removal and winter operations equipment as necessary.
  • Assist in ordering all materials and equipment necessary to complete assigned activities.
  • Assist in the evaluation of subordinate personnel, take corrective actions when necessary, including informal and formal coaching, and disciplinary measures to ensure assigned personnel are operating efficiently and within department guidelines and procedures.
  • Assist with the implantation and training of all highway personnel and make recommendations to the Superintendent for safety related needs and improvements.
  • Maintain compliance with construction and maintenance standards of the municipal infrastructure.
  • Maintain familiarity with state and federal requirements applicable for bridges, dams, highways, and storm water regulations.
  • Assist with work orders, reports, and time off requests.
  • Manage and balance any potential overtime needs.
  • Maintain a professional demeanor and treats others including supervisors, subordinates, peers, and the public with respect, while promoting and maintaining a TEAM-oriented work environment.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma / GED minimum or, above preferred.
  • 5 years of progressively responsible experience in highway/bridge/dam maintenance work to include at least 3 years of supervisory experience, preferred.
  • Current NH CDL – B license, (Class A preferred)
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience ensuring the ability to successfully perform the assigned duties..
